Look Who's Laughing Now

I remember when Jared and I were young, naive parents shopping for diapers for the first time. I distinctly remember being in the diaper aisle at Target with Jared, happily purchasing the smallest newborn diapers for our precious little one. I also remember looking at all the other diapers and imagining our tiny baby boy growing into the size one, size two, size three and size four diapers. (Ahhh, happy sigh.) I also remember seeing the size five and size six diapers and saying out loud to Jared something like, "Ha! Who's child needs to wear a size FIVE or a size SIX diaper!? Why don't they just buy Depends! Surely our perfect little baby will be potty trained by that time!" Then we both threw our heads back in arrogant laughter and ignorantly toted our little package of newborn diapers out of the store. Now, two years wiser and more mature, I realize it's okay and completely normal for a toddler to wear a size five or six diaper. I also realize (much to my dismay) that it's okay to be 2 1/2 and not potty trained. Even though I understand all this, I just couldn't shake that first diaper buying experience from my memory and have been squeezing Mitch into a size four diaper for as long as I possibly could. That is, until this week. Now, let's just say Mitch is the one doing all the laughing and you guessed it...he's doing it in a size five diaper.

weird that I JUST asked you about this at your house like 5 minutes ago! we must be on the same wave length. i was asking in hopes that you hadn't started potty training mitch yet. and then i could feel better about not having really even started thinking about it with sam. mission accomplished.

The only positive thing about size 5 diapers is that you know there is an end in sight! :) There is ALOT of talk around our house right now about turning 3...it is the magic number for my boys! However, Jack is not even the slightest bit interested...hmph. He won't go to kindergarten in diapers, though, I'm pretty sure!:)

I love it! your sense of humor is so refreshing and unfiltered. I, too judged kids in 5 and 6 diapers...man, their parents must be slackers, right? Ezra is rapidly approaching size 5, and is showing absolutely NO interest in potty training. In fact he doesn't seem to mind when he poops in the bathtub. (Extremely annoying by the way.) I remember buying Ezra supplies when he was first born, and thought, "One package (i.e. 80) of wipes should last us about a month." They didn't even last 3 days.

So the potty training thing was very hard for us. It took a long time and I strongly feel that you should not push it. We tried and it back fired. They will potty train when they are ready and then it is a breeze.

Oh ya, I think I am pretty high up there on the record board with the moms who can't potty train kids very well. Isaac was not trained until 3 1/2 and I have just recently stopped wiping his bum because he would miss spots, yuck:-( I know my time is coming up again with Seth, I just hope that my previous experience with the training stuff will help him train more easily.
GOOD LUCK TO YOU!! Size five diaper is not that bad. :-)

What a cutie! His mouth has healed up nicely and I noticed too that he has his John Deere in tote--all boy.

HA-that is such a funny story, I love how you told it. I think I've heard Jared talk about size 5 diapers before. That's so funny, I can hear him now. What a fitting picture of Mitch. Very cute.

Hilarious post, although the idea of potty training really reaffirms my "no kids ever" mantra. :)

I totally remember thinking the same thing when Morgan was teeny. And I also tried squeezing him into size fours for a while, until the poor little guys actually told me that the diapers were too tight. Now that's sad.
