Cedar Point is the Devil

Jared and I spent Saturday at Cedar Point. (A pretty intense amusement park for those of you who are not from this area.) We were celebrating our afore mentioned anniversary because I guess nothing says "I'm so happy I married you" like going from 0-120 mph in 4 seconds while going over a 90 degree turn 420 feet in the air. (Yeah. I wasn't exaggerating when I said it's pretty intense.)

I actually have no idea what I was thinking when I suggested we go to Cedar Point for our anniversary because I'm not a big theme park/roller coaster kind of gal. However, I did manage to have an okay time in spite of the fact that I spent most of the day absolutely terrified. I have a tendency to scream like a little girl on most amusement park rides but I actually kicked it up a notch on Saturday. It's been a long time since I've been on any type of ride and the first one we went on (Maxair) was really quite scary. So much so, that I teared up when they buckled me in! Yes. I cried up until the ride started and then proceeded to scream like a maniac until it was over. The worst part? I was sitting next to a girl who was about 8 years old and she didn't make a peep. I think it was a good thing we went on such a scary ride first because it worked a lot of anxiety out of my system and I managed to hold it together the rest of the day. Although we had a decent time, Jared and I both decided that we're too old for this stuff. The rides gave us headaches and made us dizzy and our backs and legs hurt from standing in line all day. In all honesty, by the end of the day I felt like I needed someone to push me out of the park in a wheelchair. No lie. So here's to five years of marriage and (barely) surviving a day at Cedar Point. I don't think we'll be heading back anytime soon.

Wuv, True Wuv

Today Jared and I are celebrating FIVE years of wedded bliss! Here are some random facts in honor of our anniversary:
1. Jared took me to Chicago and proposed in Lincoln park.
2. I didn't have my nails done for our wedding day.
3. We danced to Louis Armstrong's "It's a Wonderful World" for our first dance.
4. We went on a Caribbean cruise for our honeymoon.
5. Jared gave me a map he antiqued for a wedding gift.
6. I gave him a set of tools.
7. Our wedding cake was delicious. I still crave it often.
8. They announced us as "Mr. and Mrs. Gerald R---" at our reception.
9. Five years has gone really fast.
10. I am delighted I married Gerald, I mean Jared.

(PS. Thanks to my dear friend Marnae for taking our lovely engagement and wedding photos!)

Difference in Reading Material

Tucked neatly in our bathroom magazine rack, you'll typically find the current issue of Real Simple magazine, a few home decor and clothing catalogs and several other books which include, but are not limited to: "Danger Stalks the Land: Alaskan Tales of Death and Survival" and most recently (the inspiration for this post), "The Book of Buckskinning II: A How To Guide for the Primitive Muzzle Loader."

Bet you can't guess what reading material belongs to me and what belongs to Jared? (Hint: I'm not planning to use buckskin for any sewing projects in the near future.)

This is Getting Ridiculous

Jared and I sold another car. Our 1992 Toyota Camry wagon. I know what you're thinking. "Didn't they just buy that car?" The answer would be yes.

A little background for you. In the 4 1/2 years we have been married, we have owned a total of...drum roll please...SEVENTEEN CARS.
(This number does not include the Chinook camper we co-owned with Jared's oldest brother or the Ford Explorer we recently sold but never had our name put on the title.)

So, for those of you who don't already know this about Jared and I, let me do some explaining. When we first got married, we agreed we would only buy cars we could pay cash for. We didn't want a car payment. Our plan? Buy older cars from private owners who are motivated to sell. This plan not only gives Jared the opportunity to utilize his killer negotiating skills, but it also gets us a lot of good deals on cars. Then, we try to sell before we have to do any major repairs (which for older cars is usually within a year.) This buying and selling strategy, coupled with the fact that car shopping for deals is a hobby of Jared's and making a profit (of any kind) is a hobby of mine, has made us the proud owners of 17 cars in less than five years.

But really, seventeen cars? I know, I know. It is getting ridiculous and it's not something I am proud of. In fact it can be a little embarrassing at times. Hence the reason I felt I needed to do some explaining before anyone sees me driving a different car. So when you see me and think "Is that a new car? Didn't they just buy that other car?" You will already know the answer. Yes, we did just buy that other car and now I'm driving a different one. You will also know the reasoning behind it. Jared found a deal on Craigslist and Kim is greedy and wanted to make a profit. What can I say? It's just how we roll.

Surprise!

So this is my third post of the day and it's not even noon yet. BUT rest assured, the dishes are done, the laundry is folded and my children are dressed. I, on the other hand am still in my jammies but you can't have it all, right? This is an actual conversation I had with Jared yesterday regarding his upcoming 30th birthday. (I have no idea what to do!)

Me: Jared, tell me what you want me to do for your birthday. Do you want a surprise?

Jared: You want me to tell you if I want a surprise. Isn't that an oxymoron?

Me: Just because you tell me you want a surprise doesn't mean you'll get one.

Jared: Oh.

Me: See, you never know. The surprise could be that there is no surprise.

Silly Jared.

Urban Date Night

Since Jared and I spend most of our time rockin' the suburbs, we decided to venture out for our date night on Friday. We were also kid-free for several hours so we opted for a restaurant on North High Street called "Mozarts: European Piano Bar and Bakery." We really liked it. There was no wait for a table. It was quiet and quaint. It wasn't expensive. The service was friendly and they had a bakery case full of all manner of deliciousness. I enjoyed a curried chicken salad sandwich and Jared had the restaraunt's specialty: chicken schnitzel on a homemade croissant.
For dessert we had this:
It was definately a nice break from the crowded, noisey chain restaraunts we normally go to. After dinner we headed to OSU campus to check out the Wexner Center for the Arts. We strolled through a couple galleries and even popped in on a hip-hop open mic night taking place. Interesting. All in all, it was a good evening. Full of lots of cultural activities you can't find in the 'burbs.

Couples Tag

My sister-in-law Autumn tagged me but I want to put this on the table up front: I really enjoy filling out quizzes, surveys and random facts about myself. In fact, I wish I could find a way to make a hefty living filling out surveys about my self. I think that would pretty much be my dream job. Does that make me a self absorbed person? If it helps, I also enjoy reading quizzes, surveys and random facts about other people.
So here goes...

How long have you and your significant other been together?
5 years. We met over Christmas break in 2000. (I was attending BYU at the time) We met again when I moved back to Ohio in the spring of 2001. We didn't start dating until two years later, January of 2003. So we've been "together" since January 2003.

Who eats more?
I'd say we're a pretty even match. It depends on who is more hungry. Jared can probably eat more on a general level.

Who said "I love you" first?
That would definately be Jared. (Although I don't remember when he said it...is that bad?) When I eventually said it...I said something like "I really, really like you." And Jared had to say "You mean you love me." And then I said "Yes." So I said it without having to actually say it. I'm weird.

Who is taller?
Jared, by four inches.

Who sings better? I'm not a vocal genius but I think I take the cake on this one.

Who is smarter?
This is a silly question. Jared is smarter than me in a lot of ways...he has great business sense and he reads a lot more than I do. I got better grades in school but I don't think that makes me smarter. I just studied harder.

Who does the laundry? Me.

Who does the dishes? Me.

Who sleeps on the right side of the bed? Does this really matter? I think Jared does for the time being.

Who pays the bills? Me.

Who mows the lawn? Me, most of the time. I really enjoy doing it though. I never had to do it as a kid so it's still a fun new chore for me. (I think Jared got burned out doing it when he was younger. ) Funny story: I actually mowed the lawn the day I went into labor with Spencer. I'm sure our neighbors had to be thinking, "What kind of husband has his VERY pregnant wife mowing the lawn?"

Who cooks dinner? Me, most of the time. Jared has a few great concoctions he throws together on occasion.

Who drives when you are together? Jared, almost always.

Who is more stubborn? Hmmm...I don't think either of us are very stubborn.

Who is the first to admit when they're wrong? Neither of us are ever wrong. Joking. Probably Jared.

Whose parents do you see the most? We see them equally I'd say. We may see Jared's parents a little more often.

Who kissed who first? Jared definately kissed me first. I used to say "it takes two" but he totally caught me off guard. He knew that I think first kisses are weird and awkward. So he laid one on me before I had a chance to feel weird. It was a good move.

Who proposed? Jared surprised me with a trip to Chicago. He proposed in Lincoln Park.

Who is more sensitive? Jared. (He writes poetry for crying out loud.)

Who has more friends? Probably me. Only because I keep in touch with more people from college and high school.

Who has more siblings? Jared. He is the 6th of eight. I am the 2nd of five.

Who wears the pants? I'd say Jared...although I'm no doormat. I can take a pretty firm stand on certain issues.

Okay, so I'm not sure who has already done this one...if you haven't done it already and you feel so inclined...I tag: Margo, Bethany, Vanessa and Jessica.
